Nell Revel Smith
Lives and works in Leland, Michigan
Nell Revel-Smith is a contemporary Impressionist whose love of Midwestern landscapes and radiant light have inspired her lush, floral-filled landscapes and still-life paintings. Her work explores early mornings and late afternoons when the light is saturated and colors rich, enlivening the landscape's texture.
Although initially an abstract painter, self-taught Revel-Smith became more and more enamored with the French Impressionists, particularly Monet, and their concentration on capturing shifts in atmosphere through changes in light. Revel-Smith is currently employing the use of a palette knife to make the majority of her paintings.
After summering in northern Michigan for three decades, Revel-Smith settled there permanently in 1991 with her husband, Powell Smith who, as her manager, enables her the luxury of time to paint. Their home and studio have been featured in Country Home magazine (Sept./Oct. 1994). The artist has had numerous one-person shows, and is included in private and corporate collections across the country.
